What is Kratom?
Kratom (also known as Mitragyna speciosa ) s a tree that grows in the tropics and typically does not shed its leaves. It belongs to the Rubiaceae family (a coffee family) and is originally from Southeast Asia.
It can be found in Myanmar, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Thailand, Cambodia, and Indonesia, where its leaves (called kratom) have been utilized in herbal medicine as early as the 1800s. In the past, they were also used in the form of tea, as well as chewed or smoked. Kratom has stimulant effects and opioid-like characteristics.
What is “7-OH?
7-Hydroxymitragynine or 7-OH, an alkaloid in the herb that has not been studied much, is now starting to receive a lot of interest from both the pharma industry and from patients suffering from severe chronic pain. 7-Hydroxymitragynine is a potent alkaloid found in kratom, acting as an active metabolite of mitragynine, kratom’s primary psychoactive compound. It’s known for its significant effects in small concentrations, contributing to kratom’s ability to increase euphoria and reduce pain. This compound is identified as an opioid-like substance due to its interaction with brain receptors, particularly the mu-opioid receptors, which are also targeted by morphine.
While 7-hydroxymitragynine and morphine both provide pain relief and euphoria, they differ in several ways. 7-hydroxymitragynine is approximately 13 times more potent than morphine in terms of its effects on opioid receptors. It exhibits antagonist activity at certain opioid receptors, leading to different effects and withdrawal symptoms compared to morphine. Unlike morphine, which is heavily regulated, 7-hydroxymitragynine’s legal status varies, with some states banning kratom entirely. Potential benefits of 7-hydroxymitragynine include its use as a natural remedy for fatigue, pain, and other ailments. It is considered a safer alternative to traditional opioids, as it acts as a partial opioid agonist, offering pain relief without the same level of addiction risk. However, misuse can lead to addiction, tolerance, and withdrawal symptoms, especially at high doses or in isolated form. Despite its promising properties, careful attention is required regarding dosage and consumption methods to minimize risks.
